They are a form of dietary supplement that contain live bacteria and the official definition of a probiotics according to the World Health Organisation is “live micro-organisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host”. Bacteria are commonly thought of as something bad and harmful to our health but in fact, many bacteria are essential to keep our bodies healthy. The primary function of these friendly bacteria is to fight and indeed fend off the harmful bacteria.
